Have you been to Upham Beach?

Unique area in St Pete Beach with amazing views. It’s Upham Beach!

Upham Beach is a public beach and a small residential area on the barrier island of St Pete Beach.  This place has long been a beloved spot for many locals and tourists alike.  You are guaranteed to hear foreign speech when you visit Upham.  A convenient cafe with a seating area attracts attention of the eastern Europeans who love to spend their vacation in one of many 2-story condo complexes along the beach.

Upham is wide and there’s plenty of room for flying your kite without interfering with others. (I wrote this post last week before tropical storm Debby hit our beaches, so as of the time of posting the beaches have lost some width.  Don’t worry, our beaches are still beautiful, just a little narrower now. Less walking to the water for you! They will soon be restored to the most accomodating state!)  You can’t walk much further north because just past the rocks is the Blind Pass channel offering direct access to the Gulf of Mexico.  Besides small community condos there is also a number or larger complexes.  Silver Sands is one of them.  It is a gated oasis featuring tennis courts, direct beach access, 2 large pools and lush landscaping.
Then there’s Envoy Point with a private tropical beach garden and views of the Gulf and the Blind Pass.  There’s also a small private beach there.  The rocky jetty is often occupied by fishermen.  Come here at night if you want to do some shark fishing!  Starlight Tower is next to Envoy and it’s a co-op (a co-op is simply a different type of ownership compared to a condo. You own a share of the complex and an approval process is a bit different).  Startlight is a Great old-Florida community that will surprise you with beautiful sunset views.  Caprice resort next to Starlight overlooks the Gulf and Upham Beach.
When you come to Upham Beach you will notice huge yellow sand sacks that are lying in the water.  They serve as jetties to break the waves and prevent any beach corrosion as that area is notorious for being washed out and possibly placing one of the complexes foundations at risk.

Just a block in on Sunset Way you will find a Russian restaurant and lounge called St Petersburg Nights.  They often have shows, disco nights, dance and music performances and of course unique Russian food.
